(hed) p.e. INTERVIEW
November 16, 2002

Ed Martin for Prophecy21.com: How's the tour been goin?
D.J. Product 1969 of Hed (planet earth): It's been good man. We started like a month ago its all been headlinin. We had DJ Z trip out with us for a couple weeks, then we did the Voodoo festival and that was nice. Right now we've been headlinin with Nonpoint and Dragpipe. I'm all into Dragpipe right now, they're pretty dope. I've become good friends with them too.

P21: What are your plans for after this tour?
DJ P : I think we're gonna sit with the record for a little bit, try to make a video for the single. Our first single is called Blackout and our record comes out in March we still have to do all the photo stuff and that crap.

P21: What can fans expect from the new album?
DJ P : I think its more rock we mellowed out on the rap and got more into the heavy vocals, its still got the Hed element in there though, we still blend a lot of everything. We've got our mellow song we've got our punk song, you know its all different I can't even begin to explain.

P21: What are some of your favorite bands to play with?
DJ P : Well I like this band Dragpipe right now, I think they're pretty dope, I'd like to tour with them some more. They're like an east coast version of us. And there is a band out of Chicago called Slitheryn and the singer is only like 12 years old and I really think they are the band that really impressed me this year. That was like me at that age. We've had a lot of good tours with like Papa Roach, Linkin Park, System of a Down, and Soulfly they are like my favorite bands to go on tour with.

P21: Whats your favorite song to play live?
DJ P : Thats a hard question. It all really flows together, but theres a new song on the new record called Crazy Life, but we havent played that live but once we do I think that will be my favorite.

P21: Do you think playing OZZfest '99 helped you get a lot of your fan base that you have today?
DJ P : Yeah man, that was cool tourin with System of a Down and back then we were a little bit nutty and we've sobered down a little bit since then, at least some of us have.

P21: What or who are your influences?
DJ P : Well I like a lot of different types of music so I couldn't even break it down to one person. There are some skateboarding idols, punk rock idols, this and that, influences just come from everywhere. I can't really pinpoint one thing. It's hard to define.

P21: Where'd the band form?
DJ P : Huntington Beach, California. I was originally from Long Beach. In the fall of 94 I was approached and they told me what they were doin and I didn't even know what rap metal was then, there really wasn't much maybe Beastie Boys and Rage. I didn't really know how to approach playing turn tables in a band so it took a lot of work. I never really expected to go this far, I mean gettin signed and tourin, I'm really suprised. I mean I've been around the world a couple times that trips me out man. Even what we're doin here in Jersey today it trips me out we've been here four times and that they keep takin us back it means a lot. So it's been interesting.

P21: Are there going to be any hidden tracks on this album like the last one?
DJ P : We haven't put it all together yet, but there could be some stuff like that, yeah I think there will be. The record took like a year to make and we've been doing more stuff right up til before this tour.

P21: Who would you like to tour with to support the album?
DJ P : Dragpipe would be cool. Soulfly if they continue to tour on there record, I'm into their music. There's been talk about maybe doing the Guns and Roses tour ya know that'd be cool. Ya know man it's all good we get a long with a lot of people.

P21: What are some of your hobbies outside of music?
DJ P : Skateboarding, surfing, and graffiti. That's like really what I do everyday of my life. I wake up skate over to the skateboard park and then do a little DJ'in and then go out at night and do some paintin and taggin, thats a full day for me. You got to keep doin all the stuff you do cuz thats what keeps your life goin. Some peoples thing is playin video games and usin the computer thats not for me though I've never really had a computer, I don't have a cell phone or any of that. I don't really have much in my life except what I do. I got my skateboard, my tools and my instruments that's what I use in my life.

P21: What's your favorite part of being on the road?
DJ P : I like seeing all the people around the world. Like here we are on the East coast meetin all these cool people like here I am talkin to you that's what I like. I like the East coast man I like the people the food. And ya go to Europe and theres some nice places there. I was in Japan then a week ago I was in Florida just kickin it in the ocean and there were all the palm trees on the beach. Ya never know man, right now its all stormy and cold but a week ago I was swimmin in Miami or wherever it was. So it's interesting, just constantly bein in another place everyday.

P21: How did you come up with the name of the band?
DJ P : I think when I met these guys the name had already been founded. When we got signed we had to add the suffix to trademark it and I still don't like it. It's a confusing name to a lot of people, but we just get away with it. We've got a dumb name. But theres a lot of bands with dumb syllables and suffixes that you don't know what they mean like look at Run D.M.C. or Sum 41. I've answered that question a ton of times and I still don't know how to answer it.

P21: Do you have any funny stories from the road?
DJ P : Yeah, but I can't really get into all the details, I kinda have to protect myself, so I can't really confess to what we've done. It's kinda the code of the road. Just in case ya know anybody reads yer site and goes , "Oh thats the fucker that did that shit!" It's kinda like that but we are definitely very destructive and chaotic. Did I mention we have Sonny Mayo from Amen and Snot in the band now, Chad left and we're all good but now we've got Sonny. And he's like another brother we all love that dude.

P21: Is there anythin you wanna add?
DJ P : Yeah umm I think the albums comin out in March so buy it and help us out we're still really an underground band and we really never sold gold or anythin are bands mainly made it on the live show. I know everyone can get it for free now on the internet but try and help us out and buy it if you could. Thanks.
