DEVILDRIVER INTERVIEW
June 3, 2005

Ed Martin for Prophecy21.com: How's the tour with Machine Head going?
Dez Fafara Vocals for DevilDriver: Its been going incredible man, let metell ya. Most of the shows have been sold out. Rob's voice came intosome problems in the beginning for about six days and we ended upheadlining those shows and everyone ended up just hanging out and having agood time. Now he's back and that's great and the tour is winding down wegot about eight or nine dates left.

P21: How'd you guys decide to do a cover of "Ace of Spades" on this tour?
DF: It's just something we like jamming to, it's just fun. And I'mheavily influenced by Lemmy obviously vocally, if you check out some of mystyle, and whenever I've met the man he's always just been real cool. Andlet's face it, any time you play that song the crowd just goes crazy and itsalways cool to come outside of yourself and do something that is somebodyelse's music.

P21: How did Phil from Machine Head start coming out to do it with you?
DF: I think everybody was just kind of hanging out one night and we justsaid come on out and he did and then he just kept coming out and comingout. He actually didn't come out last night, it was weird. We sort ofjust lost him before the song and we looked around for him, but I think hewas doing an interview or something. It's a way to show camaraderie onthe tour as well, kids are digging it, and right then is when I giveMachine Head props for taking us on the tour then I say here comes Philfrom Machine Head and its just a cool deal.

P21: How have people been reacting to the new material so far?
DF: They've been lovin it! We do "Driving Out the Darkness" and "HoldBack the Day" and some given nights we do another song called "Sin andSacrifice". It's been great they've really been taking to it. Anytimethat they're not just standing there movin there heads just listening andthey're just pitting through it that means they're into it.

P21: For those who haven't heard the new album yet, how can we expect itto differ from the last?
DF: It's definitely a growth. If you have heard the first one, you'llhear the growth immediately. If I had to explain it, I'd say our firstalbum is a little more linear, which actually in other terms means simple. Now things have escalated to just epic proportions for DevilDriver. Imean is there room for growth? Definitely. I think the third, fourth, and fifth albums will be even greater and I manage to keep surroundingmyself with good musicians and people that wanna play the kind of musicthat I like.

P21: What's behind the title of the album?
DF: You got your own makers hand, your God, and I got mine. Your livingin the fury of your daily life I'm living in the fury of my own daily lifeand we're each living in the fury of our maker's hands. My life has beena storm the last ten years and I needed something that would come off as atitle that would be fitting of that.

P21: Are you looking forward to starting the Sounds of the Underground tour?
DF: Most definitely man, how could you not be excited? Its gonna be sucha great time! There are so many great bands and we know a lot of them andwe're looking forward to hanging out and barbecuing and just meetingpeople.

P21: Is there anything that you dislike about playing bigger tours likethat?
DF: Nah man, I like it all, from the small clubs with like four or fivehundred kids to big things like this. The thing about tours like this isit will be a very diverse crowd, you got like hardcore kids and all thesedifferent sub-genres. I personally hate the whole sub-genre thing inmusic, but it's a way for people to express what's going on. I think thatthere's gonna be so many different types of bands it's going to bring outso many different types of people. Another thing I like is I am a big fanof music and I get to check out great bands all day long. Like, I'm a bigfan of Clutch and I can see Clutch every day if I want. It'll be great. We just secured some off-dates with Lamb of God, Clutch, Gwar and a fewother bands.

P21: How did you guys decide on which track to put on the Sounds of theUnderground compilation?
DF: The whole band just kind of put their hands up and were like "End ofthe Line" definitely. I mean it's my band, I run it, but we're extremelydemocratic that way and with anything that deals with that kind of shit. We're always extremely democratic and everybody just put their hand up andwas like "End of the Line", which I don't even know if they got the introor if its just the song on there.

P21: Do you guys have any plans for a DVD?
DF: Yeah, we're talking about a DVD. We may film all the stuff on Soundsof the Underground and subsequently go ahead and splice that together andput it together for a DVD. We'll have to see.

P21: Where are some of your favorite places to play?
DF: Definitely Texas. Last night we played Houston and that was great. Wewere just recently in Jersey and that was an amazing show. You know what man...anywhere with a microphone, a stage, and people screaming, I'm there.

P21: What's your favorite song to play live?
DF: Right now it's "Driving Out the Darkness" off the new album becausethe riff is completely fucking thunderous.

P21: Is there any one show you went to that you didn't play that youremember as one of the best shows you've ever been to?
DF: Black Flag and The Circle Jerks together at the Cuckoo's Nest inOrange County, California. I was thirteen years old with a shaved headjumping up and down freaking out.

P21: What do you usually do to kill time on the road?
DF: You know, I'll sit around and listen to music, I'll write, readbooks, watch movies. Same shit most bands do you know. Try to write forthe next album already, try to get ahead of the game.

P21: What are your plans for after Sounds of the Underground?
DF: We're talking now and I think we're going to do Europe, then Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. After that we're gonna come back and wegot something really big offered to us that I wish I could tell you, butwe just have to come together and finalize it first. So cross yourfingers for the future.

P21: Thanks is there anything that you want to add?
DF: Anybody that's a fan of music, anybody that has supported me in thepast, anyone supporting DevilDriver now or in the future, much respect toya. Hopefully we'll be coming to a town near you and we will not let youdown if you come out to a live show.
